Anonymous, to add to JRR's comments, start looking for bonus words. There are many words not in the puzzle that will add to your score. Good players can enter up to 40 or so bonus words, depending on the puzzle. Don't waste too much time looking for these during a tourney. Practice finding them during the week and them remember them.

"To post a list of bonus words is wrong."

Where does it say that??? It's not a cheat sheet, but a study list. These are not math problems, for crying out loud. Helping others is obviously not in your nature.

Every one of your posts nails you as unhinged. Please stop this. IT'S A GAME!!!

    Anonymous:
Laura do you really need to post a list of bonus words? Seriously? Is this the way PersonaNonGrata operates?

    Response:
A list posted publicly for all who are interested in increasing their scores. I didn't need to do this. You're also welcome to download. I'm surprised you have enough time to play, with the constant monitoring of others. Please turn down your vitriol. It is REALLY becoming tiresome.

Does Anonymous conceive of the idea that a year of playing will improve speeds? Afraid to state your identity? You can copy and paste very well, we can all see that.

We have no cheaters on PersonaNonGrata, but some very fast players. We share strategies, bonus words, and word combos to maximize points. There's no need to cheat if you know how to play and have played long enough. I'm not the fastest person on the team but can easily score 1000 points per hour WITHOUT cheating.

It's always been beyond me why some people assume that faster players must be cheating. When I get overtaken, I just strive to up my game. Frankly, it takes much longer to look up words. If you need to do that, memorize them and you'll become a better player.

Just received a message from PF.

"We have identified the cheating and are working to stop it in the future. We will be banning players that are detected cheating and they will be blocked and removed from playing in tournaments. We will be fine tuning the detection over time and it should get more effective each tournament."

Note that this is about true cheating--with outrageous scores--not players who are fast. I've come up against players who can rack up more than 1,000 points per hour, and I'm sure quite legitimately. Do I think they're cheating merely because they're faster than I am? No way!

RWalsh (aka RubbishW) I never believed there was cheating before this past weekend; thought it was all about sour grapes. PF is still responding to me that 9997 points in just a few minutes into the tournament is possible by buying coins and playing offline.

I'm not sure you actually encountered cheating. Coming up as quickly as those players did to you is possible, using the methods mentioned above.

PS: Did you see the links to evidence that I had? I posted them in response to your comment to me.

Anonymous, I remember thinking as you do when I first discovered Wordscapes. However, I've been playing for something like 9 or 10 months and I feel like I know most of the words by heart.

However, I think the process is somehow like when we're first learning to read as children. We need to spell out each letter individually, but as we progress we begin to see entire words. Similarly, when I'm playing now, the words just seem to pop out at me. So don't get discouraged. After 4 months your scores increased by almost 5 fold. I think you'll see a real increase in speed as you keep playing. (And the accusations of cheating by slower players will start getting on your nerves too! 😜)

JACQKATS, I respectfully have to disagree with your opinion that the claims of earning 500 points an hour are ludicrous. Like some others here, I am a faithful NY Times crossword player and hold more than one degree. I am a technical writer by trade and play Wordscapes to de-stress.

I don't pay to avoid ads, so impatiently sit through them during tournaments, and on average earn just under 1,000 points an hour. I know I'm not the only one; some months ago, I sweated through over three hours of excruciating competition with another player and could barely keep up. I lost that one.

As far as doing the math, in response to similar claims as yours I posted a video to YouTube showing a timer on the screen as I solved. I rarely need over a minute to solve a puzzle. There was also a YouTube movie playing in the background to prove that there was no sleight of hand as respects the timer. This is not to brag, and I no longer hope to put to rest the accusations of cheating, but think that when you've gone through enough levels you'll see that the words do get repetitive.

By the way, my family members are all superb Scrabble players and that's how we spent much of our time when growing up. I do agree with you about the futility of cheating in a game where there are no prizes or recognition. And maybe there is some sort of cheating going on, although for the life of me I can't see the point, or even see how such cheating would even work. To look up the words (which are not so difficult) would merely make someone solve at a slower rate.

Xalariax, I've been reading about cheating here for several months, and think it's mostly sour grapes. There are some fast players here who just don't need to cheat. There are word unscrambling sites out there but if you need to use them, there's no way to do it as quickly as it would take just by knowing the words yourself. I average just under 1000 words per hour playing fair and square. What would be the point of cheating? What a waste of time!

Someone here stated several weeks ago that some speeds are "not humanly possible." I got a real chuckle out of that. It's like someone nearsighted saying that 20-20 vision isn't humanly possible. (Personally, I'm terribly nearsighted.) Too much energy is going into accusing others of cheating. When I first started playing here I lost every tournament. I just kept playing and got faster. That's what I suggest--just keep playing and try to beat your own score from one week to the next. It's more fun that way.

Tascioni, definitely NOT cheating, just fast players. I've clocked myself at just under 1000 points per hour and there are better players here than I am. I've always played fair and square and am soooo tired of accusations like this.

Waverider, I'm with you! I've won tournaments and I've lost tournaments and I've never accused the winners of cheating. If they're faster than I am, it creates an incentive for me to improve my speed. Stay away from the sour grapes. They just take all the fun out of playing.

It might not be technically cheating playing in airplane mode during a tournament when you don't have to, but it sure is an underhanded way to win. I don't think cheating is something to boast about or be proud of.

Manco, I've since gotten to about 12,500 some weeks ago. It only happens when I'm playing against someone serious. ;-)

So far this tournament I'm only at 3,690. But the number two person is at 2,377 and number three is 1,154 so I haven't been killing myself. Plus, I went to a funeral this morning and a 50th wedding anniversary all afternoon and evening. Lots of dancing and music and we just got home (traveling in two states), so I'm pooped. I don't know if I'll win this weekend because we're out all day tomorrow also.

Knsping, the person may have been playing offline for some hours accumulating points. Then when he or she came online the points all appeared at once. I was playing offline for a while today while my husband was driving and we had no reception. It would have appeared that I earned my points all at once when I got back into range. It stinks when you think you're ahead and someone makes a big jump like that, but they're not necessarily cheating.

Wordsmithwick, I was addressing the many accusations made that solving puzzles in the 46 seconds range is only possible by cheating.

We all know that there are sites out there with the answers. There was even a suggestion made that a player could use such a site by having someone else call out the answers. Some players choose to play in Airplane mode to avoid ads or to play when out of range. I've never seen a list of rules stating that this is cheating. Some have claimed that using coins for hints is also cheating. In any event, these issues were not addressed by my post, which was only meant to prove that it is definitely possible to score quickly without needing to look up the words. There are many fast players here who shouldn't be called cheaters. It may be frustrating to think you're ahead only to have someone appear from out of nowhere. I agree that consistently using such a "stealth" method may be underhanded. This was not the point of my post.

Ok, I don't know if this will convince the die hard cheating conspiracists, but I recorded myself for 10 minutes with a timer and a very bad Lon Chaney Jr. movie playing in the background. There are about 7 or 8 levels included and they're not my fastest and also not my slowest scores. I find that using the mouse is not as fast as swiping with a finger, but I hope it proves the point. There is obviously no looking up words and I’m by no means the fastest player here.

Anonymous, I don't know how slow your device is, but if you see the words, 46 seconds a round is very doable. Some rounds might take longer, but some can be done much more quickly than 46 seconds.

Beezy, those scores are absolutely possible playing fair and square. At times I play on my PC where there are no ads and I know that others also play this way. Last month (on my phone, with ads) I clocked myself playing one entire level at 13 minutes, earning 72 bonus words and using 1 clue. I'm currently averaging just under 1,000 points per hour.

This is not to brag, but to reinforce the fact that speed does not equate to cheating. Just long hours of play. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app 3 times when there were limited levels, and am now at level 13,520. When you've solved that many puzzles, you just get faster.

Debs, I don't see anywhere in the rules where it says you need to be online or else you're cheating. I don't play offline unless I'm out of range somewhere, but I do hate sitting through ads.

Ali, I believe you absolutely!! Too many accusations here of cheating when in reality there are some very fast solvers here. I consider myself fast but I've been beaten and have never once considered that I lost to a cheater.

To the person who said it's impossible to get 5000 points in 24 hours, that's not true. I've been playing for about 4 hours now and have accumulated well over 5000 points. I think at the higher levels (I've got 3 left) the points get much higher.

I really appreciated the tips posted by Dragon and want to add that the shuffler helps me tremendously. Whenever I get stuck on a word, I keep reshuffling until I see it. The toughest word took me about 10 minutes and I got it by accident. I think it was "saguaro" and it was definitely one I'd never heard of.

Also, I've never bought any coins but they accumulate quickly (winning a tournament is a huge plus) and I will definitely spend 100 on a tip if I'm really stuck.

I play on my PC and there are no ads. I get very frustrated by them when I play on my phone. When I finish the levels (probably by tomorrow), I'm going to uninstall and then reinstall so that I can keep playing. I'm that addicted. ;-/

I really don't understand these cheating accusations. I play half of the time on my PC and there are no ads. The rest of the time I play on my phone when I can't sleep. It so happens that you fall into a rhythm when you learn the types of words accepted in this game. You can get quite speedy. I lost the first tournament I played. That didn't make upset with the person who won.

Kamuela, I suspect there's not as much cheating going on as people think. There are very fast players and there are people who can't solve that quickly who think those players must be cheating.

However, there are a very few players who have found a way to load impossible scores. For example, last week in my tournament a player called BigBrain entered the tournament right away with 10,000 points. Within hours, this player advanced to over 500,000 points. PeopleFun identified the cheating and claims that they will in future be blocking cheaters from tournaments.

I never dreamed I would post something like this because I really thought PF had a better handle on this game. My tournament began last night with someone ("BigBrain") already in first place at 9997 points. That score remained static for about three hours and then jumped to 29997, where it has remained. I've been sending screenshots to PF and have been told that the person is probably playing offline. (?!?)

My crowns have also been a problem and PF keeps saying they're going to fix it. I'm beginning to lose faith in this game. Have always hated the "whiny" posts but just had to say this.

KATZ, sorry I didn't see this sooner. It was an old HBO movie I found on YouTube called The Fatherland (with Rutger Hauer, one of my favorites). I was watching an old documentary called The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, based on the book by William Shirer and when it was over this movie came on. The premise is that Hitler won the war and envisions a future based on that outcome. Miranda Richardson was also in it. I'm just a sucker for a good tale.

OPAL, heh heh, I don't think so. I was actually a few seconds late...my game had been primed and ready to solve the last word but I forgot the time and didn't notice until 6:10. When I jumped back to my phone, an ad had popped up. 😣

CHARLIE, welcome back! We missed you. I think you had asked a few weeks ago if playing out of range during a tournament would add points. I tried it this weekend while traveling and was truly offline. We needed to get into an area with a signal for me to rejoin the tournament.

LYN BENSON, I've also noticed a lot of repetition. (Hominid has come up quite frequently for me as well.)

Although I didn't recognize anyone from my tournament, I had a worthy adversary in De50 who kept me busy. I ended up with a score of 14,335, which is my personal top score.

I tried syncing exactly at 5:03 CST but don't see anyone I recognize. I'm currently at 2030 and second place is 1800. Not sure how much longer I'm going to hang in there. (I'm also cooking in between puzzles.)

Many thanks to Katz, Shell, WSW, Sapphire, Opal, Manco, and Jeff for the kind thoughts. We're fine, although the car is a little scraped due to black ice on the road. I'm so envious of those of you who are enjoying nice weather!

It's been a long, busy work week, so I'm going to try syncing again. It will be my third try. Ruffian, I hope to see you.

So impressed reading about the CHATS. Well done, all!! And AMY and MANCO, thank you both for your concern.

I was leading in my group as of this morning with just over 10,000 points. But my mother took a bad fall around noon and smacked her head really hard. We took her to the hospital and when they released her at 7 PM a major snowstorm had already made the roads impossible in our NW corner of Connecticut.

We had another car wreck on the way home from the hospital. 🤤 Everyone's fine, just the car really bruised, but I wasnt able to play all day and wound up coming in at second place.

Will try to sync again next weekend.

Thanks, Manco. I was a little p**d off when I read that comment and just couldn't resist. 😜

So sorry about your accident! I was in a wreck about two months ago where the jaws of life had to get me out of the car. I'm still sore in some places, but hubby and I were able to (almost) walk away intact.

EC, I've also had a problem with the same error message from my phone. It's curious because at one time I was able to post -- the problem suddenly began a few months ago. BTW, my Dad was a WWII vet as well; he lost his right arm in France. We lost him a few years ago and I miss him every day.

Sapphire, I had the same idea and emailed myself the weblink to the forum so I can use it from my phone.

We've got a weekend guest coming in tonight at 10:00 (EST) and my husband is going to do the train station run so I'm hoping I can sync in at 10:05.

SAPHIRE, how did you check the puzzle by number to know which was 798? That's awesome!

JEFF, like you if I can't *see* a word in about 10 seconds during a tournament, (it's usually in the heat of a competition) I don't feel guilty about asking for the first character in the word. I've currently got just under 160,000 coins (95,000 on my phone and just under 60,000 on my desktop). I'll use maybe 2-3 hints during a competition and feel that I've earned the right to spend the coins.

AMY, well said about balancing the challenge with the gratification.

ELVISTINKLE, great to meet you! I'm amazed you got as many points as you did with a 4-year old around.

Sooz, fora is one of the recognized words PF accepts. Forum is also, not sure why it wasn't recognized in your puzzle. This particular *forum* we're currently on (Game chat 😊) is mostly made up of folks who got tired of the "cheating" allegations on the other forum. There are a lot of really fast players here who would never accuse anyone of cheating and would agree with you, as I do. If you want to see some really "wild" cheating conspiracy claims, you can check that one out. 🤣

WSW, I tried commenting the other day and couldn't log in for some reason. It was funny because twice that day I saw the word polis -- in your comment and in a book I was reading. Glad to know it's a valid word here. Thanks!

Well, I finally tried it. Last night I was at 5,646 in first place and second place was Grammie at just under 3,000 I think. I changed my name to GoGrammieI'mDone and was hoping she'd do it. It was a struggle not playing but I couldn't sleep last night and about 2:00AM I went into airplane mode so that I could still solve but not accrue any more points.

I'm so happy to see that she's now in first place at 6001!! Go Grammie! 😃👍

Wordsmithwick, I'm talking about "bonus words" separate from the puzzle, just like you mentioned. Whenever you get one of those bonus words, a tally appears at the bottom left and when the game is over, you get a coin for each of the bonus words you found. This is separate from the Brilliance points.

Katz, the way you know there is a bonus word is if the circled star icon is at the bottom left. If that icon does not appear, there are no bonus words. But when you see it, you can assume that there is at least one bonus word. Once you get at least one bonus word, you can click on that icon and see a list of the extra words you found.

Saphire, the icon was showing for this puzzle, indicating that there is at least one bonus word. My original post mentioned that I was looking for a bonus word. I was able to find all the puzzle words.

Saphire, thanks so much, but I've tried all of those. I hate when I can't get even one bonus word to a puzzle.
Wordsmithwick, I'm looking for a bonus word and of course, coins won't help there. I make it a goal to try for at least one bonus word if Wordscapes indicates there are bonus words available. This one has me stumped.

    Saphire, I'm at level 19,912.
Wordsmithwick, it shows that there's a bonus word but I've never been able to find one. And there are no 3-letter words allowed. 🤔

Corky, the coins are great for when you're stuck or have brain freeze. When you're down to your last word, tap on the hint button (the light bulb) and the first letter of the word will pop in. Each time you ask for a hint your coin reserves will go down 100 points. Just don't get too hint happy and start relying too much on hints. Keep shuffling until you're really stuck. The coins can be a huge help.

Cheryl and Saphire, that's impressive. The most words I've gotten is about 35, I think. (I'm currently at level 15,368.) And I've wondered why Swede is acceptable whereas Dane isn't.

Has anyone ever had the same word twice in a row? I've had that happen at least 3 times.

Wordsmith, I used to start at about 10:00 to 11:00 pm EST on Friday night but this past weekend I started the tournament as soon as it opened. There were only about 4-5 serious players but they all quit at around 3,000, so starting early didn't seem to make a difference.

Wordsmith, I LOVE that name changing strategy!! I'll have to try it if I ever get in a good race. But in most of the tournaments I've been in, people are only going to around 3,000 points and then stopping. I average just under 1,000 points an hour so I go way beyond that and feel like there's no real competition.

To answer your Facebook question, there's not much chat by Wordscapes players, mostly postings by Wordscapes. A few Words of the Day posts (which I didn't know) but the last one posted was in January. I disconnected my Facebook account because it caused problems posting here.

Wordsmith, I don't have a WiFi connection problem, but I recently connected my PeopleFun account with my Facebook account, which uses a different email address. That's what I suspect caused the problem. I contacted tech support and thought it was fixed. But now I'm having intermittent problems connecting to the forum.

The tournament I'm in this weekend started out exciting but seems to have petered out. I got to 5000 yesterday but the next 2 competitors have stopped at about 3000 and I haven't seen much activity today.

My high score was between 11000 and 12000 a few months ago and I came in at second place. I've since gotten over 10000 twice but only when there's some competition, which hasn't been too often lately. I'd really love a good challenge one of these weekends!

I just found this game last week and love it! I was sick in bed last weekend and played all day. Now I'm addicted and playing against myself to improve my solve time. But I'm playing so often I'm wondering what will happen when I finish the levels. Will I still be able to play?
