SAPPHIRE, well, I'm feeling pretty stupid right now! A mind is a terrible thing to lose! Valzheimer. When I went to the tournament I abandoned to see what you meant, the top score was 14576 and second place was 11204 and the top 10 over 5000. Glad I ditched that one. They are out of my league! Thanks for explaining. I didn't realize the tournament scores were number of words. Thought they were like the brilliance points ... SIGH! ;)
CHARLIE, Someone in one of my tournaments changed their
name to "Youhavenolife." ... made me chuckle, and take a break! Glad you remembered to go and spend some time with the wife on this lovely day. I'm going to spend the day with my Granddaughter today.
SAPPHIRE, thanks. Mine doesn't appear to be counting every word. It seems more like the daily puzzle, where you seem to get one star for every 3 or 4 words in the puzzle, and one coin for each bonus word.
I started 4 games this weekend. Two In Bloom.
I'm #1 in the last game I started, and #99 in the first Wordscapes game I started this weekend. I just gave up with my 1 point, and their 300+ score within 5 seconds of my starting the game, and started a new one on hubby's notepad. I'm dropping the two In Bloom games too, and concentrating on staying in first in the remaining game.
New high word score for me ... BRIDES ... 52 words 34 in puzzle and 18 bonus words. After I found all I could on my own, I went to the scrabble word finder and tried every word with 3 or more letters, just to see what happened. I found a couple more, but more than half were not accepted.
SAPPHIRE, can you send me a screenshot of what you use to calculate words per hour? I can only find brilliance points and something in the bottom right corner that seems to add 1 coin for each bonus word. I just counted the words in a puzzle (19) and the bonus words (8) and compared to my increase in coins, which was only 5 plus 8, or 13. I'm confused. If that's what you've been using to calculate your average words per hour, your score is lower than it should be.
MUGSY, Be careful if you don't have unli.ited data on your mobile wifi. I ended up paying Verizon $30 for data overages while I was traveling. Don't know how much was GPS usage, and how much games, but keep an eye on it.
SAPPHIRE, agreed that it's worth it to get rid of ads. I entered the Wordscapes tournament at the very start with all but the last word completed. All 100 slots were filled, and no one else had more than 25 points. So I abandoned Wordscapes and went to Wordscapes in Bloom. There the highest player was at 25, and I quickly moved to a race between 2nd and 3rd place with a Nana. The 1st place player was about 100 points ahead of both of us when I quit playing for a minor cat emergency.
CHARLIE, Haven't tried Wordstacks yet. Still have a game available if anyone wants to try to sync.
Good for you, Charlie!
I'm in a Words in Bloom tourney with a Nana and a cardinal. We've been trading between 2nd and third place.
Even with the change to no offline playing in tournaments, and only 1 letter to complete my puzzle, the first place player had 300+ points to my 1. How does that happen?
If anyone wants to try to sync, pick a time!
KATZ, hilarious! I think we'll all remember lier as a bonus word now!
SAPPHIRE, Thanks, I'll check it out at the next tournament. During the week mine only seems to tally bonus words. (Bottom right corner)
ISAIAH, I've also been frustrated by the number of valid words that are not accepted. They have commented that they intentionally restrict the acceptable words. But I haven't found .another game that I like better.
SAPPHIRE, I can't figure out how people are calculating the number of words. Brilliance points seem unrelated to the number of words played.
SAPPHIRE, Are you using brilliance points to determine words per hour? CHERYL, Thanks for Ulama. KATZ and others playing Wordscapes in Bloom, there are even more popups to buy stuff you don't want, up to $39.99. I accidentally purchased once when my notepad fell, and I picked it up, accidentally touching the popup.
Congratulations everyone! Especially JEFF and SAPPHIRE, and to the Canadians for the US open win. I'm curious to see what happens next week with the offline play. This weekend I was able to play offline with Wordscapes, but the new tournament on Wordscapes in Bloom was online only. On the one hand I like knowing that people can't play offline and swoop in at the last minute. On the other hand, people who are traveling won't be able to compete offline, and will either use up a lot of data or have to sit through ads if they haven't paid for ad free ... be careful what you ask for, you might get it! I could still play Wordscapes in Bloom, but my points didn't add to my tournament score. CHARLIE, PN is right, SHELL was to be on a European cruise for 3 weeks. WAVERIDER, the levels keep going after 6000 ... You will see Masters Level on the tournament star at the beginning of the tournament, and they seem to use a lot of repeat levels..
CHERYL, I think you can still play wordscapes offline in tournament mode.
JEFF and SAPPHIRE, cool that you were able to sync again.
I'm at 2nd in Wordscapes in Bloom. I like knowing that no one is going to sneak in under the finish line by playing offline until the very end, but am bummed that the prizes are only 1000 for 1st, 500 for 2nd, etc. Not that I need the points, just seems cheap of the game. Heading back to bed. I'm 1000 points behind #1, and not motivated to catch up.
Cheryl Kauffman -Phillippi
Try playing in Airplane mode in Wordscapes in Bloom.
I went into airplane mode, and it showed a big offline sign where the tournament sign was. When I went back online, none of the points I would have made appeared. I'm glad they addressed that issue. The bad news is that 1st place is only awarded 1000 points instead of 2000. You still seem to be able to play offline on the original Wordscapes during a tournament, but I wonder if they are trying to change that, and that's why so many people started out as one person in their tournament this weekend?
Sorry, I won't be joining you!
Apparently, I accidentally entered the tournament last night when I completed all but the last word. I guess I should have done that before the tournament started. Hope someone else connects.
Cheryl Kaufman-Phillippi ... I'm in ... Pick a time.
LAURA, I was pleasantly surprised that my refund was approved. Hope you have success as well!
Congrats JEFF and SAPPHIRE! Jeff, we're enjoying your win vicariously. I managed to stay in second place, despite not playing for the last several hours. I'm not touching any of the games until I get my refund resolved, and then I'm taking the credit card off the accounts.
CHARLIE, glad we all prayed the hurricane away from you ... but like you, I wonder who it's going to land on instead. Praying for everyone in its path.
LAURA, Let me know how your refund attempt goes.
SAPPHIRE, THANK YOU! Your directions were better than Google Play's! They are reviewing my request. Will let you and Laura know if they respond favorably. The other link you shared seemed to be mostly people upset about not getting their refund. Do you know if I can turn off purchase in the apps themselves. I hate to just remove my credit card. I buy books from book bub almost daily. They always have a confirm button, and I've never had a problem, but with this game I don't even know how I accidentally purchased anything. All of a sudden I had coins from those annoying bees. Ruined my tournament for this weekend, as I'm afraid to touch the stupid screen.
Thanks, SAPPHIRE. I'll try it. In the meantime, I removed hubby's credit card from google play. I know this is a "whine free zone", but it's just wrong that they make it so easy to accidentally purchase things you don't want. I don't have this problem with my book bub account. There is always a confirmation with it.
LAURA, Just happened to me too. $24.99.
I wouldn't have noticed except I suddenly had a bunch of bees, and asked hubby to check his bank account. I thought I had disabled the one touch purchase, but that may have been on my other account after the last time I was charged 5.99 for an accidental purchase on my wordscapes in bloom game. I let that go as a learning experience after google said contact wordscapes, and wordscapes said contact google. But I'm motivated to get both of our money back. If I don't, I'm either never playing again, or canceling all of my google play purchase power. Has anyone here ever gotten a refund.
Charlie, "Catch Me" worked best for me.
Glad Jeff an Sapphire have managed to sync. That's twice for you, Jeff! The magic touch! I'm not going to play much this weekend. Might let the Grand use up all my coins for rockets. She loves them! No zeros on my board, although I did have one in the middle of the night that started out with only 72 players, and then added more as the tournament went on.
Anyone sync? I forgot to do all but the last word before the tournament started, and was frantically trying to finis the puzzle with Lucent. Unfortunately, I didn't have a "clue" until it was too late!
OD1, I always think of prayer cover as the calling in for air cover (air strikes) during war time. Hope some of us connect tomorrow. The more who try, the better the odds.
Mugsy ... try tomorrow morning, if your not too hungover!!!
Thanks Cheryl, I'm not sure who all are trying to sync Saturday morning with SAPPHIRE and me. I think we had maybes from Charlie, Jeff, Opal, and Paddling Nana for Saturday at 7:05 AM Pacific, 10:05 AM Eastern time.
Cheryl, We are already doing 10:05 EST Saturday morning.
I have a second device if you'd prefer to start tonight or have two devices.
Do you want to try to sync later tonight? Can't remember your time zone.
Okay 7:05 AM Pacific, 10:05 AM Eastern for anyone who wants to try to sync with SAPPHIRE and me.
PADDLING NANA, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
I don't think any of the people who have said they want to try to sync on Saturday are crazed about competition or winning. We might "let you win" for your birthday! ;)
Sapphire, Yes, it was 7:05 or 7:15 AM Pacific time, but if that's too early for you we can start later.
Charlie, let me know when. I'm fast in sprints, but can't play long, so if we connect, it will be tortoise vs. hare ... As I recall, the tortoise won! But don't get yourself in trouble again! Better chance of syncing on Saturday. And that gives you Friday night for dinner with your lovely wife! ;)
Steparoo, no one seems to know how the score (brilliance points) is calculated. It is more than just the number of words completed, so it may have speed or number of bonus words calculated in somehow. Anyone else know?
Anyone want to try to sync? Pick a time. The only one that has worked so far was Saturday morning.
Paddling Nana, OPAL's hubby had the oncology appointment, I think yesterday. JEFF is the great guy who's taking care of his Mom. Sorry Jeff, but in a thread with a disproportionate number of Grannies, you're going to keep getting kudos for being a full time caregiver for your Mom. Welcome back, PN!
Thanks, SAPPHIRE! Excellent description, and explains why I couldn't remember if you click on the star or hit the back button ... it can be both if you are already in a level. Also, I never thought of using screenshots to record scores.
Mugsy Bar. I've run into three. The first one caught me by surprise and beat me. The second one came in about 15 minutes before the tournament ended a couple of hundred points ahead and I used up about 1500 coins (15 hints) to beat him. I would have been better off to take second with 1000 coins than to spend 1500 to get 2000, but I was just MAD, and determined to win if it cost me every coin I had! The last time, someone suddenly popped into 3rd, and I had my best laugh in a week thinking that his strategy backfired! I hope it was Cheating Charlene from the old cheater post! ;)
Can someone help Lisha? I can't remember if it's a back arrow, or if you click on the large gold tournament star. If you only see yourself and you look like you are in first place, turn your airplane mode off. Then try the above.
Charlie, I can see the place for airplane mode ...
Obviously, when on an airplane, but also when traveling anywhere that you don't have wifi. The game seems to eat up a lot of data. But to use it as a game strategy does seem shady, especially at the end of a tournament. It doesn't take that much data to check in periodically, so your score doesn't "come out of nowhere". Plus it can be bad strategy, beyond its "impropriety". ;) I thought it was hilarious that someone "came out of nowhere" to land in third place behind me and another player ... If they're not checking in periodically, they don't know how far ahead the other players are.
OPAL, I did see the Masters level when I touched the big gold star when the tournament started. I have arrived in the big leagues! ;)
When I didn't manage to sync with anyone on Friday night, I started a second game on Saturday Morning. I won it with less than 3000 points, in spite of my 7 year old granddaughter "helping" me! But only because Brill (short for brilliance points?) quit with an hour left to go right after she passed me and took first. If she had kept playing, she would have won.
Blue, Yes, I won. Someone named Brill, who was much faster than I head to head let me win. They passed me by 100 and then quit. I kept playing, thinking they'd be back, but they just never came back, and hadn't "gone stealth" in airplane mode. They probably didn't need the coins.
Mugsy, glad it worked for you! Davy, when we are trying to sync start times with others in chat, we finish all but the last word of a puzzle. Then our point score shows up as one when we start the tournament..
You are welcome Opal! The name change idea was from Lolo.. I think it makes the game more fun with little comments. Especially if you find someone with a sense of humor!
Speaking of no competition ...
I'm in first place with only 912 points. Second place is 712 ...
Unless someone is a day sleeper, I'll be winning easily.
Sorry I missed everyone last night!
We can try again next weekend.
Opal, prayers for you and your hubby.
PN, real life "Notebook" kind of love!
JEFF, Hope we can sync again. I'll leave a 3 letter word. I'm too likely to slip if I try to hold out for the last letter. I waited for the clock on my phone to tick to the start time last time. Kudos to you for being a caregiver to your Mom. I hope you get some R & R ... Put you own oxygen mask on first! There are some truly awful definitions for brit ... I'm surprised they use it, considering that they reject the word slut.
KATZ, I did pay $2.99 to have the ads removed. It's really hard to win a tournament with the ads playing. The other option is to play in airplane mode for a while and then go back online periodically to check on scores. I used a lot of data while traveling without wifi access, because I didn't know you could play in airplane mode. It will only show your score, and it will look like you are in first place while you are in airplane mode. I don't like to use it unless I'm out of free wifi range. But I don't have to sit thru ads.
Katz, From what I can see, it looks like you pay $2.99 in real money for coins, and then get all of the coins accumulated in your "piggy bank" free. Just another gimmick to take your money. Also, make sure you disable any "one click purchase" on Google Play, or wherever you downloaded your app. I accidentally bought $5.99 of coins, etc on my Wordscapes in Bloom.. I'll never see that money again. I don't have the piggy bank on my first device. It came on when I downloaded the app on my hubby's device. I don't like it, because it's just one more stupid thing like bees that I don't want and could accidentally purchase. Haven't figured out how to disable the one click purchase on his tablet yet. Also, it slows me down a few seconds after each puzzle., which is annoying during tournaments. Anyone is welcome to try to sync with SAPPHIRE, OCEAN BREEZE and me, WordSmithwick at 6:15 PM Pacific, 9:15 PM Eastern tomorrow.
Cheryl, cool find! I got 20 bonus words in the word genesis today, including gneiss, a kind of rock ... (Yes, I got that one from the anagram solver!) But there were only about 15 words in the puzzle, so still only 35 total.
SAPPHIRE, I can do my second puzzle at 9:15 Pacific if we don't connect on the 6:15 Pacific. Or do you only have one device?
SAPPHIRE, sorry I got the time zone wrong, but if it still works for you, sounds like OCEANBREEZE might be able to join us at 9:15 PM Eastern.
ANONYMOUS, Perhaps use the name you play under, if you want to try to sync (start a tournament at the same time with someone from this chat group).
SAPPHIRE, 9:15 Eastern, 6:15 Pacific PM on Friday works for me.
I have a second device if anyone wants to try another time.
CHERYL, Thanks! I'm waiting to see if my tournament says 'Masters" this weekend.
LAURA, I've noticed some of the same words pop up a lot, but never twice in a row. Last weekend, I did hit a patch on my higher level game that I had done earlier on my lower level game. I didn't mind though, as it was fun putting words in as fast as my fingers would go while racing against JEFF last weekend.
Thanks, OPAL! Try googling Jotto, if spellcheck will let you! There is an online free game you can play (it has the words augie hill in the site. I tried to post a link, but the screen froze on me. SAPPHIRE, Thanks for the link. I had also read it, but couldn't remember where. I'm game for a sync. Pick a time.
KATZ, I rarely use an anagram solver during a tournament. Unless I'm really stuck, it's slower than just playing without it. I started using it during the week both to conserve coins for hints, and also to see if those claims of 70 words per puzzle were possible. I don't think so, with the restrictions on eligible words.
I just hit level 6000 with a new word for me ...
Chive ... a community of misfits, according to Urban dictionary. Perhaps an apt name for some of us in this chat community! Some in this group, including myself, have serious doubts about claims of 60 or 70 words in a single puzzle. It's possible that it could have happened before People Fun changed the dictionary. If you look at an anagram solver during a puzzle, you will notice that there are many words that are rejected as bonus words. It's also possible that people are confusing "brilliance points" with number of words. My highest number was about 40, and that was a large puzzle with 2 "S's". Anyone else have an answer for Katz? I've been posting a lot lately ... It's time I gave someone else a turn!
Cheryl, DOH might not be a bonus word, but DUH is! ;)
OPAL, I just noticed today that when you check the meaning of a word, the dictionary reference is not always the same. Check out a few ... They seem to "cherry pick" words from different sources. We used to play a game called Jotto, where you tried to guess a five letter word by guessing words, and being told how many letters of your secret word were in the guessed word. It was good strategy to choose a secret word like ocean. Three vowels, and beginning with a vowel. For some reason, it seems to be pretty universal that we expect words to begin with a consonant. I think OD 1 was attempting "Pig Latin" to make a similar point about the difficulty of finding words that start with a vowel.
Odd Bonus words found in ACTION:
CANTO COATI CIAO OTIC IOTA
Thanks for your posts. They cleared up a few questions for me. I always wondered if other players in my group of the tournament had the same words as I did. Since you and I played in the same group last weekend, and I didn't have either Phoenix or Phalanx, I assume that players just have whatever words are at the level they were on when the tournament began. In a way, that makes the competition more fair, since more experienced players have more difficult words. Also, I've begun to associate invisible words (earl and earn are two I frequently miss) with a more "visible" word. If I see canoe, I'm reminded of ocean, once and acne ... all beginning vowel words that are easy to miss. And before I waste a hint, I have started to automatically look for words beginning with a vowel. So if you see near or real, you know that earn or earl are hiding in there! ;)
Bonus word for today, GYRE
Also encountered LIMBIC inside BULIMIC.
SAPPHIRE, Thanks for the contact email.
OPAL, Great idea about hiring us to create new puzzles! ;)
While they are fixing things, they could add a new
dictionary that recognizes more words. I still get
frustrated when I enter perfectly good words and
they are rejected. Are they trying to keep us from
earning an extra coin that would buy us
one hundredth of a hint? Sorry, I forgot this was
a whine free zone!
Speaking of whining, I checked out the cheating
comments section. Had to chuckle at the one
who said, "Anyone who says they won the last
tournament is a LIER!" And at the response above it!
Anonymous, no one from People Fun ever answers any of our questions on this chat, and I doubt anyone knows the answer. Sorry.
SAPPHIRE, great stats ...
Is "Doh!" a bonus word? ;)
JEFF, Thanks for the correction. I just realized that was when I took my nap. I woke up to Jamie having suddenly passed us and assumed his/her stealth mode, when it was actually my snooze mode! ;)
CHERYL, congrats on your win! I prefer the slower competitions. As Jeff said in an earlier post, it only takes one other player to make it a race, but sounds like you had no one interesting.
OPAL, See Jeff's posts below for game recap. A third player named Jamie went into Stealth mode, playing in airplane mode and suddenly jumped over both Jeff and me. You can read Jeff's posts below for more details. Jeff ended in second, and I in third. Glad you had a good competitor in Min. It was the Saturday morning sync that worked. I started one at 4:15 Friday night Pacific Coast time. I ditched it after I found out that Jeff and I had synced. If we try again, maybe we can put CHAT or something in front of our names to be easily recognized. Jeff was looking only at the top scorers, and I started out at 96! ;) And by the time I thought to ask if it was him on this chat, he had already posted that he didn't see any familiar names. He finally noticed my name when I hit the top 5.
JEFF, No worries ... neither of us needed the points.
I was just curious whether you decided to "let him win",
or whether Jamie just pulled a stealth move on us.
S/he stayed at the same number for a LONG time.
I like the idea of adding WS before the name change.
Although I don't change my name until later in the game,
and only if I'm in the top five. I had thought about adding
something like CHAT at the beginning of each person's
name who is trying to sync to more easily identify each other.
I was way below the top 20 when you were looking.for us.
I think I started out at 96! Anyway, it was fun. Thanks!
MANCO, If he was 2000 points behind, conceding defeat sounds more likely than letting you win. That used to be a joke line at our house for conceding defeat in a chess game. My husband used to get mad at me for conceding, even though it was obvious that I had lost half of my pieces, and was likely to have a long and painful "death" of my king! ;)
MANCO, You scored 12000? WOW!
JEFF, did you decide to let Jamie win?
Or did he just pull a stealth move and pass both of us?
MANCO ... With 10,000 points, you earned it!
JEFF, That WAS me going all out! I was pulling ahead of you for a while there. Then my brain hit a wall ... I didn't "let you win" ... I just conceded defeat! And then took a nap! ;)
Thanks for a fun game. I did let the girl on my second tournament win. I basically bailed on that game when I found out that you and I had synced. I suspect she hasn't won a game before, because she was really slow in head to head. Hope no snipers pick her off, because the scores were really low. Hope everyone had fun, and got some real life in this weekend too.
JEFF, Changed my name to go for it because my brain was going fuzzy and I didn't want you to wait for me and get passed by Jamie. Then I hit a batch of puzzles that I had done earlier on hubby's tablet, and started zooming through them. Don't wait for me any more ... I'm a sprinter, both in track (50 years ago!) and in the game. I go in really fast spurts and then wear out. Plus I don't need the points. Plus you don't have to let me win because I look like your Gramma! ;) It has been fun! If I wake up before the tournament is over, I might enter the chase again.
If not, beat Jamie for me! ;)
JEFF, JAMIE JUST PASSED YOU!
I'm on the move again!
PN, I enjoy it more when hubby "helps", even though he frequently slows me down!
JEFF, Jamie is on the move again, so I started playing again. When I wasn't using hints, you were gaining on me, but then it looked like you quit again ... So many more important things to do in this life than this game! ;)
I think Jamie gave up. I'll take a break to let you catch up.
I had to use hints to keep on the same pace with you.
I think you're still faster than I am one on one.
Tell your lovely wife there are worse addictions! ;)
Next time you sign on during a tournament ,
check to see if yours says Master or Masters.
PADDLING NANA, Thanks for trying to sync, even though it's probably why you ended up in a slow tournament. You should try to sync with the other master's level players on here.
Ok JEFF, I won't wait for you then ...
Nice to know it's possible to sync.
My next question is what qualifies you for a
I assumed it was reaching the 6000 level,
now that the levels are limitless,
but apparently not.
CHARLIE, after you hit the magic 10,000 points,
did you go to Master's level?
JEFF! WAKE UP!
Jamie is faster than I thought, and I had to zoom to stay ahead of him. Taking a break to charge my batteries ...
And my tablet's batteries. Let's tag team Jamie! ;)
WOW! OPAL, THANKS!
JEFF, and I are actually in the same tournament!
Just when I was about to give up trying to sync!
I missed your earlier posts when we were all 3 around 1300, and last night, when the three leaders all gave up and went to bed. I'm in 1st by a few points now, so you'd better wake up! Do you need points, or do you want to just both go for the win? I don't think Jamie is as fast as either of us head to head, but I've been known to be wrong! You were faster than I was last night, head to head, o I'd better quit talking and go post a few points! Hardest words this tournament nitrite, limbic, and stymie had me stymied for a while! ;)
Davy, I think you're right about the odds of our actually syncing with someone in our chat group are really bad. I might try again after I hit the 6000 point masters level. Maybe there are fewer players at that level, and better odds of syncing.
SAPPHIRE, good idea to take breaks ...
I've discovered that I like to let people pass me.
I like hearing the little ting sound when I pass them again.
PADDLING NANA, yes, I check right away. It's not hard to catch up, and I get to hear all of those little tings! ;)
If your goal is to win, your strategy is good, but if you want to compete one on one, as I do, it's better not to get so far ahead. People get discouraged and give up. The only time I've really pushed hard to win was when a sniper came in with about 10 minutes to go and about 300 points ahead of me. I used about 2000 coins for hints to pass him and win. Odd, since I had been planning to let the second place player win. Snipers just really annoy me ...
I'm only at level 5558, so I'll have to work to catch up to all ya'all masters! Neither of my games has much competition so far, so I'm playing both of them. I just got one person to move by posting "CatchMe" as my name. I was gone for several hours and they were within a few points of me, so I didn't start playing again until they were a couple hundred points ahead of me. Changed my name to "Congrats". Caught up again and passed them by a few points, changed my name to "I'm back" ... Think I'm going to have to let this one win ... She tries SO HARD!
Thanks for trying!
Did anyone make it into the same group? I didn't, even though there were 14 extra spots when I started. It's up to a full 100 now. I don't see a "Masters" anywhere on mine.
Weird word for today ... gibbous
SAPPHIRE, I'll try that tomorrow. I'll set my phone alarm for 7:00 AM, and finish the last letter when the snooze alarm goes off.
Paddling Nana, The more people who try at the same time, the better chance we have. Nothing to lose anyway! Welcome to the 7:05/10:05 AM challenge. I just read that over 10,000,000 people have downloaded the game. If it doesn't work tomorrow, I think I'll stop trying. Or at least stop trying to organize it. Someone else can do it, who can figure out time zones without getting a headache! ;)
Opal, I started out at 96!
Maybe if I'd been just a tidge slower,
I'd have ended up in the same tournament with you!
Yes, tidge is a real word, although spellcheck doesn't like it.
A cross between tidbit and smidge! Urban dictionary.
Now I'm slightly in the lead with 513.
I'm going to let #2 catch up. She's trying so hard!
Someone named Raven was really fast.
She stopped at around 250.
Not sure if she was being nice, or just ran out of hints.
If she's that fast without hints, I'll never catch her again in a head to head. If by some miracle I end up syncing with someone tomorrow, I'll ditch this game and stick with the new one. Good luck everyone!
No Opal, no familiar names from chat. Hoping someone connects tomorrow. The odds against us are probably phenomenal.
Sorry we missed you Mugsy! Jeff, I agree that I have more fun with small spurts of one on one competition than long bouts of boring, repetitive words. Hope we connect tomorrow. Opal ... Ready, set ...
Jeff, thanks for the new words!
Opal, no worries. I don't care about winning. I usually let someone else win and come in second or third. If I've started both hubby's and my games I will usually abandon one or the other midway.
Charlie, have you been permanently sidelined, or can you try to sync either time?
Okay OPAL, Trying for 4:15/7:15 PM tonight, an hour and fifteen minutes past tournament start time.
OD1, SAPPHIRE, OCEANBREEZE trying for 7:05/10:05 AM Saturday.
If anyone else is trying for either of these times, post your game name so we can look for you!
OD1 ... if the word you were looking for was WRONG, I find that the older I get, the easier it is to admit. Growing up as a "Paralyzed Perfectionist" and then marrying someone who was as perfectionistic as my Dad ... (Be careful when you think you are marrying "Mr. Right" ... check to see if his first name is "Always") ... I've found it very liberating to stop trying to be perfect, or always right. I usually say, "I may be wrong, I frequently am ..." More frequently as I get older. There's a reason my brother calls me "Valzheimer"! ;)
OD1, I'm going to use hubby's game for one, and mine for the other, although I doubt that it matters what skill level you are at. If they do have an algorithm that accounts for either what level you are on, or how many brilliance points you have, it must be set up to have a mixture of skill levels in each group. Otherwise you'd have more people scoring in the 5000 to 10000 range in one group. Instead I generally see the top 2 or 3 exchanging places, and a bunch of people at the bottom who seem to have accidentally wandered into a tournament by completing a puzzle at the same time as I have. The group starting Saturday morning is likely to have less competitive scores, both because they are starting with 16 hours less play time, and because the really competitive players are champing at the bit to get started as soon as the tournament begins. I also think that we'll have a better chance of connecting at a later time, because fewer people are trying to enter then. And we'll have a better chance of staying in the top 5, where it's easier to "chat" by changing names.
PN, just turned 67 last week. I was thinking that you could enter at two different times if you used both devices. Or you and hubby could try to sync into the same game. I'm starting with a couple of people at 7:05/10:05 AM Saturday morning. I Sapphire, formerly Wombat, and OceanBreeze, formerly Cheryl? I was having a hard enough time keeping track of everyone before we started name changes! And I'm waiting to see if Opal or anyone else wants to start at 4:15/7:15 PM on Friday night. Those are West/East coast times. I'm not even going to try to deal with Central USA because not everyone is on Daylight Savings time, which I personally think is incredibly stupid and wish they would end! For ease of reference, the Friday night start time is an hour and 15 minutes after the tournament starts. So anyone who wants to try to sync, set your alarm and have a puzzle completed all except forthe last word before the tournament begins. Then when your alarm goes off, enter the last word, and we'll see if anyone ends up in the same tournament.
Opal, how about 7:15 PM your time?
I'm nowhere close to you, as I haven't even finished my first 6000 levels. Are you the one who mentioned a Masters Tournament? If so, we aren't in the same league at all.
Manco, you're welcome
Anyone want to pick a time for Friday night to try to sync?
Already attempting to sync with Sapphire and OceanBreeze at 7:05 AM Pacific time on Saturday, but I can enter with hubby's tablet too.
Cheryl and Opal, when I've already admitted to being a Grandma, there's no point to disguising my age! ;)
Opal, I have another option to start a game at a second time. Can't remember what time zone you are in, but pick a time and I'll try to sync with you. Preferably not before 4 PM Pacific time on Friday, as I think we'll have a better chance if we wait for the rush hour at the beginning of the tournament to be over. I haven't noticed a "Masters Tournament ". I'll have to look for it this weekend. Maybe I'm just not in it yet.
My Favorite songs and favorite artists are not necessarily the same. The favorite songs represent relationships at various stages of my life. At sweet 16, it was "Cherish" by the Association. Next was "Happy Together" by the Turtles. Then Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues. Next, my Joni Mitchell period ending with "Both Sides Now". The only thing my ex and I both loved after 7 years was our kids and Simon and Garfunkel. The "Sounds of Silence" about sums that up. And then "Forever" by the Little Dippers. Only 14 words, like hubby, who is a man of few words. And 30 years later we're "Too Old to Rock and Roll, Too Young to Die!" (Jethro Tull)
ODD 1, Glad I made you laugh out loud, but TMI!
OCEANBREEZE, and SAPPHIRE, hope to see you Saturday at 7:05 AM Pacific time
Opal, I wonder if they meant 2000 Brilliance points?
Wombat, you mean finish the puzzle except for one word before the tournament begins on Friday night, and enter the last word at 7:05 AM Pacific on Saturday morning? I'm in!
Paddling Nana, don't you have 2 accounts? Or is your hubby using the second one?
Wombat and Cheryl
7:05 this Saturday AM Pacific
10:05 AM Eastern.
We'll See what happens.
Should we all try to get to a short puzzle? I think that leaving one word undone only works at tournament start.
Anyone else? I also have hubby's tab if anyone else wants to try to sync a start at another time. OD 1?
Wombat, If there is a performance factor involved in the groupings as well as the start time, we are pretty evenly matched.
Wombat, if I remember right, you are also Pacific Coast Time. I'd rather you pic a time, as I'm almost always available. Do you want to try for Friday night or Saturday morning?
OD1 ... My spellcheck wants to turn you into ODD 1!
I'm at level 5485 with 247,607 brilliance points.
Does anyone know what brilliance points are, by the way?
Hubby's is at 1612 with 68,492.
If you are close to either of those levels and want to try to sync starting times this weekend, let me know and pick a time. I'm Pacific Coast Time zone, but I'm retired and have insomnia, so pretty much any time works for me. I agree that the later we start a tournament, the more likely we are to succeed.
Using nebula and nebulae in the same puzzle seemed tricky ... glad I didn't hit that one during a tournament!
Back from my weekend with hubby and the Grands!
OD1, Cute story about your name.
Elizabeth and Paddling Nana, re: picture and Facebook:
When I connected with Facebook, my picture automatically popped up next to my name in Facebook, which I don't really like, and I still didn't see anywhere to chat. If I can get out of it without losing all of my points, I will. I don't see any pictures on here, but I seem to remember a picture on Lolo's posts. Charlie, I have also wondered if Lolo changed her name and is on here somewhere, since she's the one who gave me the idea of changing my name to "chat" with people during the game. Charlie and Cheryl, we have probably all had those "look at me" moments when our fingers are too slow to keep up with our words ... and then hit a wall. I try the scramble then, to see new combinations. Looking for words that start with vowels ... urge, ogle, ogre, earn, earl, etc. Buying a hint with earned coins, since it's usually the bonus word that I'm stuck on, and if all else fails, I try an anagram solver, like for totemic and mimetic.
Does anyone know if we all have the same words during a tournament? It seems when I have started both hubby's and mine at different times when we were trying to sync start times, that there were different puzzles in different tournaments. But I wondered if the same puzzles were used in each group of 100. It would also make sense that a lot of the low scoring players just ended up in a tournament without really caring whether they win.
Well, I finally got in the tournament. I think I just have a bad internet connection in our vacation rental. Sorry no one connected this week. It's back to the beach for me today with my grands! Have fun!
Well this is a new one. I didn't have wifi when the tournament started because I was traveling. I decided to start hubby's game, and realized it didnt enter me in the tournament. So I connected to wifi and played another round, but it still won't let me enter the tournament. Has this happened to anyone else?
Elizabeth, I changed my name to WordSmithwick because there were so many Wordsmiths. Anyone still want to try to sync? I can't play much this weekend, but wouldn't mind experimenting with start times.
OD1KANOBI ... Clever name!
LibraryEllen, good idea about starting at a nonstandard time.
I won't be playing this coming weekend though. Do you want to try to organize a start time? East Coast starts at 6 PM, which is 3 PM Pacific Coast. Shell in Australia is 6 AM Saturday morning, but won't be available for the next three weeks. I think someone tried to "snipe" my game this time, but they only ended up in third place ... Ha Ha! I went from 2nd to first in a head to head race from 200 points behind, and then changed my name to I'mDoneHaveFun. I didn't need the points, and thought I should learn from Charlie's mistakes and spend some time with hubby. Hope you all had fun this weekend, in the game or otherwise!
You guys are hilarious! Apparently you're right, and conjugal is not compatible with winning tournaments! If being domesticated is Charlie's euphemism for conjugal visits, there are definitely too many letters in headache, let alone permanent headache! ;) Charlie, if your name is still MUD, don't try to anagram it into DUM, and give wife any more headaches! ;) Speaking of which, hubby is calling me! ;)
Manco, I have a few invisible words like that too ...
Almost all start with a vowel ...
Earl, earn, oral, opal, etc.
I got totemic again this weekend,
but I was ready for it this time! ;)
Manco, they're actually right on that one ...
Next time try coif ... short for coiffure (French)
Or coiff which has something to do with bikes.
They seem to enjoy using dual spelling ...
Like ocher and ochre in the same puzzle ...
And silly words like oops and poop.
Would it be a "sin" to tell Ablooblooblahblah?
Manco, I thought more player per tournament would increase the chances.
No Mugsy ... No Wombat ... No Body ... but me! ;)
Thanks for trying, Shell and Wombat! I think the odds for some of us eventually ending up in the same game this way are the same as the likelihood that Wordscapes will ever add a chat feature or have an invitational tournament! ;)
Thanks for trying ... I suspect the odds are very much against us getting on the same tournament, even if you had logged on right at six. It started me at #67 with 1 pont. Then I went to #17 with my first full puzzle. I took a break to change my name to Wordsmithwick and check for "Chatters" and dropped to 100th place! A new first for me! Someone was thrilled to move up a place! Reminds me of my 5 year old daughter starting at last place in a 1 k run with hubby. He didn't want her to get run over at the start. She was thrilled to pass two people. (Never mind that one was on crutches!)
As far as I can tell, I'm not in the tournament with anyone from here. I was both too fast and too slow. I set my alarm for 3:00 PM Pacific time. Entered my last word, and was apparently too early for the tournament. By the time I finished the next puzzle (25 words) I was 3 minutes in. I changed my name to "Anyone from chat". And no one has responded with a name change. I'm also disappointed that there doesn't seem to be a Facebook chat on here. It just put my profile pic next to my name. I'll try again at 6 PM Pacific 9 PM Eastern with hubby's game ...
Thanks Jeff, the point of filling in all but the last word was to have a better chance of starting at the same time as others in chat, not to start with more points on the board. I also thought that starting at a later time would increase the odds. I'm starting one at the onset of the tournament (6:00 EST/EDT) because I'm pretty sure my tournament will begin as soon as I enter the last word (and get my big one point!) I have my hubby's already set up with only one word left to enter, and will try to enter another tournament at 9:00 PM, and see if I end up with anyone else from this chat in my tournament. Then I'll play whichever one has another chat member, if either does.
Wombat, If another time is better for you, let me know. I'm retired and have no plans for tomorrow. We're in the same time zone and skill set, so I'm hoping it works out. I wanted to try the start time as well, because someone mentioned a countdown clock, and someone else wasn't sure that entering the last word would work. I was pretty sure it worked when I started right at 3
Wombat, thanks for the links. You and I are both in the USA Pacific Coast time zone, and if you want to try to start at 6 PM, (9 PM. EST or EDT) I'll try to start then with you. I'm going to start my other game at the beginning of the tournament (3:00 PM my time and 6:00 PM EST/EDT)
Anyone who wants to try to start at either of those times is welcome. If those don't work for you try posting another time and see if anyone else can join you.
I suggest that we use EST (or EDT as some call it) as a reference point, since the majority of interest is from there, and it is easier to calculate our Aussie friend Shell's time difference. The tournament starts on Friday night at 6 PM in NYC, and Saturday morning at 6 AM in Shell's time zone. I was thinking we'd have a better chance of getting in the same tournament if we didn't try to start when the tournament starts. Thought on this? Suggestions for start time? I was thinking that if we pick a time and have a puzzle ready to go except for the last word, and enter it at that time we'd have a better chance. It may not work, but I thought it would be worth a try until we hear something about Shell's suggestion to have an invitational tournament. Nana P, do you want to pick a time?
I think the 9th suits everyone but me. My Grandaughter will be here that weekend, and my world revolves around her! I'm jealous about the European River Cruise! But take stretchy pants, and expect to gain weight! ;)
Sorry ... Just realized PDT is MY timezone!
I'm used to hearing PST ...
Wombat and Shell,
Shell's not available this weekend or the 16th.
I'm not available the 9th.
Shall we try for the 23rd?
Wombat, I don't know what PDT means. Maybe easier to go by the time the tournament starts in your time zone.
3:00 PM for me. 6:00 PM for Opal. 6:00 AM for Shell.
If anyone else wants to try, give us your game name and what time the tournament starts in your time zone.
Shell, how early do you want to start Saturday morning your time?
Wombat, depending on what time zone you are in, maybe you and Shell and I can try for late Friday night, which would be late morning or early afternoon on Saturday for Shell? We only need to coordinate a starting time, and could play at our convenience after that ... Looking forward to seeing if Shell gets an answer to the "Invitational" suggestion.
If you're free the weekend of August 16th, we could try to connect. I have insomnia, so I'm often awake in the middle of the night.
Opal and Shell, I'm good to go this weekend, but not the following ...
Opal, pick a time. I'd prefer at least a half hour after the tournament starts. If we put in all but the last word, and then enter it at the same time, it's possible. Can't hurt to try. I could also set up hubby's for the same time and double our chances. Funny if I ended up in the same tournament as myself! Anyone else want to try?
Opal, maybe I should try to start at the same time as your hubby, since I can't give you a run for your money! But I have enough points accumulated that I wouldn't mind losing this weekend. What time does the tournament start in your time zone?
Thanks Shell and Mugsy!
Does anyone want to. Try to start at the same time.
Odds are against it, but it could happen! ;)
Just tried changing my name to Wordsmithwick. I had chosen Wordsmith because my last name is Smithwick, and then realized that a lot of people chose that name. So if you see WordSmithwick in a tournament, it's probably me. Hubby's is WordNerd. Curious what the rest of your player names are ... Hoping to play against some of you soon!
Laura Christina, Thanks. I got the "name change as chat" idea from Lolo on the cheating chat posts. It's best if you are in the top 5, and very limited, but it was fun. If you are looking for more competitive play, try starting right at the beginning of the tournament. I started at exactly 3 PM Friday night (California time) and ended up in a group with the top 3 over 10000. I started another game on hubby's laptop at midnight between Saturday and Sunday, and the top score was under 2000. Paddling Nana said her husband started on Sunday morning and won his for the first time on his own. It probably won't work that way every time, but it seems the serious players start as soon as the tournament begins. Thanks about Facebook. I may try it on my notepad, and post to this group from hubby's. I enjoy the chat more than winning. I can comfortably do about 5000 during a tournament, but beyond that my shoulders start to hurt and my brain goes fuzzy. So many puzzles have the same or similar words that I think I've already played them. And then it isn't fun anymore. I'm better off playing less and enjoying it more ...
Elizabeth/Butterfly 12, I use this one during the week to look for odd bonus words or if I get stuck. It also has definitions of the words if you are trying to increase your vocabulary. About half of the words aren't accepted by Wordscapes, but after you've played a while, you'll start to recognize some of the words that Wordscapes seems to use a lot.
Cheryl, I know you can change your tournament name an apparently unlimited number of times during a game. I read about it in a comment from Lolo, and tried it last weekend as an "in game chat". You can probably change your name here too, although I don't know how.
Shell, I installed Wordscapes on hubby's notepad, but he never really plays on his own. He likes to sit next to me and shout out words that are occasionally helpful, but more often not! So I've been using his to experiment with various starting times. So far, the later I start, in the weekend, the less competition, and lower the winning scores.
Cheryl Kauffman-Phillippi, I play differently in tournament mode or during the week. In tournament mode, I just look for whatever pops out at me first, which is usually the big word. If one of the simple words pops up, I do all of its anagrams, like (ear, are, era) or (tire, tier, rite, tie, ire). I started playing the game to help with memory loss, so it helps me to remember what I've already played. If there is an s in the word, I add plurals as I go along. When I run out of "pop up" words, I go to the puzzle to look for clues that way. When I get really stuck, I use hints, that usually give you the first letter of a word, or during the week I use an anagram solver for scrabble, that gives you most of the possible words that you can make from 7 letter words. About half of those words don't work in wordscapes, even as bonus words. I don't use it in tournament mode, both because it seems like cheating, and it's also very slow. Twice I've gotten totally stuck (mimetic and totemic) and used the anagram solver during a tournament, and let the other person win on purpose. When I'm not in a tournament, I try to look for as many bonus words as possible.
Shell, not in the same tournament with anyone from the chat that I kmow of. There is at least one other player using the name Wordsmith, because I ended up in the same tournament with another one the weekend before. Maybe we should add a code word to our names if we are trying to end up in same tourney.. Also, you kind of have to be in the top 5 for the name change to work as a chat feature. But I suspect most people in this group could manage that.. Especially if we start at a later time. I started hubby's game at 12:05 on Sunday morning, and there was no competition at all. The winner was less than 2000 points.
Just had the most fun ever in a tournament by using name changes as an in game "chat". I got 1000 points ahead on the first night, and everyone stopped playing. So last night I changed my name to "CatchMe" and two people started playing again. One changed his name to "GonnaGet You" ... Silliness ensued ... Among other names, he changed his to "GingerbreadMan" ... mine to "RunFastAsYouCan", etc. He finally caught me, and I changed my name to "GotMe" ... He changed his to "SpeedyGonzales", which was incongruous with his snail icon ... I changed mine to "StrangeNameForASnail". His to LOL.After I took a break, he had changed his to "LifeIsWaiting" and I changed mine to "HaveFun" and we both stopped playing and let #3 move into the lead ... I realized that when I stopped caring about who won, or why so many perfectly good words were rejected (like ewer, Shell), or whether a sniper was going to pick me off at the end ... it was a whole lot more fun! So congrats to Shell on being "domesticated" on your anniversary! And having the good sense not to enter a tournament this weekend, and not putting life on hold.
Thanks Shell and Laura Christina, can you chat with other players as you play on facebook? Lolo had said she'd never play on facebook and I wondered why. Do they annoy your friends with requests, or post your scores? Three new words in one puzzle ... Tory, gyro, and tyro.
Laura Christina, do you have wifi connection problems?
Elizabeth, lots of people are way higher levels than I am. It used to only go up to about 5000 levels, and many people would finish all of them and start over. I started after they changed to unlimited levels. I haven't intentionally bought any of the hints, but when I get the free ones, I like the rockets best. The daily gifts and daily puzzles help earn bees, rockets, and hints, or coins toward hints. Usually if I'm stuck, the first letter of a word will trigger the rest of it. I've noticed I am less likely to see words that start with a vowel, like earl, earn, ogle, ogre, etc. The shuffle feature is free, and often helps to see a word.
Hey Elizabeth, I'm both addicted by the game, and annoyed by it. So I'm not sure how I'd rate it. I've been enjoying this chat more than the game itself lately. Advice for newbies ...
Set your Google play to require authorization for purchases, not one tap. It's way too easy to accidentally purchase coins accidentally. And way too hard to get a refund.
The dictionary they use is screwy. It doesn't accept perfectly valid words, accepts questionable words, and often takes a plural of a word, but not the singular, or vice versa. Read through the posts in this chat for some examples. It uses some "words" that are fraternity names like tau, chi, theta, gamma (which also gives you magma) and the plural for forum, which is fora. The more of these little words you learn, the less time and coins you will waste when you get stuck. And have fun!
Paddling Nana, change your name in the game to something that Lolo would recognize. She liked to change her name to "chat" with top players ... if it's her, she might respond. I'm 1000 points ahead in my game, and thinking of changing my name to "catch me". Or not waiting til Sunday to start a new game on hubby's. Seems I end up in games with either 10000+ scores that are too fast for me, or under 2000 games where I don't want to discourage others from playing, and then end up picked off by a "sniper" playing offline until the end ...
Thanks Opal! I've been in Southern California for the last 40 years, but was born in Pennsylvania and lived 5 years in Iowa. If you liked Lonesome Dove, you'll love the Lonesome Dove TV miniseries. The first series, with Robert Duvall is even better than the books ... and that might be the only time I've ever rated a film version over paper! The second, Return to Lonesome Dove, isn't nearly as good as the first. As for books, my all time favorite is Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. She is working on her 9th book in that series, and Starz is working on their 5th season, from the fifth book. I first saw it on Starz, and was hooked from the beginning. During "Droughtlander", as fans call the waiting time between seasons, I devoured all 8 of her books. After the first season, which had more episodes and was excellent, the subsequent seasons have been shortened, and too much of the book content has been squashed into 13 episodes. Definitely a must read, unless you are squeamish about sex scenes, but those are tastefully done both in the books and on screen. I can't stand typical romance novel sex scenes ... BORING! But hers are more about love and emotional connection than about who is rubbing what parts together! ;) Of course for linguists, nothing beats the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Be sure to get it as an ebook, and make sure it has the appendices with definitions of the Elvish words. If they allowed the words from the languages that Tolkien created, I'd win every tournament! ;)
Shell, congrats on the 10000. I'm closing in on level 5000.
Does anyone know what brilliance points are? And does getting bonus words help you win tournaments, or are you better off racing thru levels? I look for bonus words during the week and use a scrabble anagram solver to check out bonus words that work. More than half of the scrabble words don't count as bonus words in Wordscapes, but I write down the bonus words that work for future tournaments. I don't feel right about using the anagram solver during tournaments. I did break down and use it for totemic and mimetic. So I stopped at the end and let the second place player win. No one else was even close to us. Hope everyone has fun in the tournaments and with family. I'm taking a tournament break the weekend of August 9 for a beach vacation with all of my kids and both grands. This game is addictive, but nothing beats out the grands!
Thanks Shell and Opal. I'll experiment with a couple of different times using hubby's and my notepads.
CHERYL, It makes sense that eons would play in the puzzle, while eon was only a bonus word, because bonus words are recognized as valid words. The ones that don't makes sense are the ones where the plural or singular of a puzzle word are NOT recognized as a valid bonus word. SHELL, I agree that doubling the number of players in the games has led to higher scores. Also, I found another accidental valid word TORR, while looking for TORE.
Servo and verso
Re: My last post ... I have no idea how spellchecker came up with "many of.the hardcover". I read a meme on Facebook this week that said, "It helps to think of spellchecker as a tiny little person who is trying to be helpful, but is slightly DRUNK! It was supposed to say, " Many of the hardcore players start right at the opening of the tournament ..."
Jeff Vincent, thanks for confirming my thoughts about many of the hardcover. Players starting right at the opening. This weekend I'm going to try starting later. I like to be in a group where I have a chance of winning at 6000. Beyond that I don’t really have a chance. Does anyone know if you can start a tournament as late as Sunday?
Weird bonus words I found today:
I'll try egad... have to admit ssh was an accidental find. I has going for she! Warning for those who have one touch purchase, you may be accidentally purchasing stuff you don't want when those popup bundles pop up. I haven't figured out how to get a refund yet, but I did manage to go to Google play settings and change to authorization required for purchases.
More weird little bonus words ...
Ended at 8:00 PM Pacific Standard Time (California).
I think this is later than it used to be, but could be wrong.
Wow! Carbonuit scored 14048,
I scrambled to overtake AK47 in 15th place,
because he had posted that he always won ...
These guys are out of my league!
I'm in two games right now, Carbonunit and Atia. The one I started right at 3:00 Pacific time has two people over 10000. I'm in 15th place with 3400. In the second game I started about 3:30 pm, I'm back and forth for 1 and 2 with 3300, which is more my speed. Just a theory, but if you enjoy a high speed chase, start out right at the beginning. And if you would prefer a mellow competition, start later in the day. Let me know if you try this.
Thanks Shell, but I like keeping the same name.
Charlie, also thanks ... Another word for you from this week's tournament ... totemic. I had never heard of it. I don't think I'll ever see a 70 word puzzle unless they change the dictionary. Too many valid words are rejected.Wordsmithwick supported this idea ·
Another Grandma here, but I haven't paddled a canoe in twenty years. I was surprised to see another "wordsmith" on my tournament. Didn't know you could have two of the same name. Kind of creeped me out, so I started a new tournament on hubby's iPad. I'm word nerd on there. I noticed that the one I started later is not as competitive. Seems like maybe the hardcore players all start right at the beginning. (3 PM Pacific) Maybe you can start a game later and still be competitive if they put you in groups that start at the same time.
Anonymous, only during tournaments.
Jake, I don't think so. There are 10,000,000 downloads of this game, meaning 100,000 tournaments of 100 each could be going on at once. So don't worry that people think you are cheating if you are not. Just play when you want and enjoy the game.
TAE, you mean Wordscapes in Bloom? I believe that it won't let people compete in tournaments when they are offline, probably to address the issues of people playing offline and suddenly "appearing from nowhere" to win tournaments.
Anonymous, tourneys are only active from Friday, 6 PM Eastern to Sunday, I think 11:00 PM Eastern.
Tae Brumit, If you don't want to play in tournaments on weekends, try Wordscapes in Bloom. Very similar, but no tournaments.
Scarlet, there are millions of downloads of this game. There are possibly hundreds of thousands of tournaments going on simultaneously. There are only one hundred people in each tournament group. So you are number one in your group of one hundred, and I am number one in mine.
Murmur, I'm pretty sure that you are right, when the tournament begins, you are each at whatever level you were playing when the tournament began.
Charlie and Cheryl, Propriety is a noun, so there is no such thing as "propriety strategy" ... You could "observe the proprieties" while using strategy.
OPAL, OKAY! I'll play nice! ;)
Manco, I missed that ... Now I can stop worrying about her! ;)
Manco and Anonymous, I thought your replies to Missy were pretty hilarious. Then it occurred to me that she might be a child. Of course, if she is, we should make allowances. If she's an adult, it will probably upset her to realize I thought she was childish. Kind of a "heads I win, tails you lose" situation.
Laura Christina Warren, I know what you mean ...
Some of the best movies of all time were oldies ...
Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, etc.
But they had some real stinkers too ...
B movies right off the production lines ...
But how do you explain the Lon Chaney movie?
Tournaments start every Friday at 3:00 PM Pacific Coast time. You may need to complete 400 to 500 levels before the tournament pops up on your screen. After that happens, you just need to finish a puzzle to enter.
Laura Christina Warren, that would only prove that YOU are not cheating, and that it is possible to put up the kinds of scores some people are achieving. The kinds of jumps that are not humanly possible, thousands of points in minutes, are likely to be people playing offline. I enjoyed seeing a player "Come from nowhere" and jump straight into 3rd place. They can't see others scores, and I'm sure they were disappointed that I and another player were way ahead of him. It's not cheating, but it's a sneaky way to win. Some people call it "stealth" mode, some "snipers", and some are just trying to save data or avoid ads. It's usually players who aren't fast enough to win in a head to head competition. There are also cheat sites where you can literally copy every answer, but I feel sorry for anyone who calls that "winning". Someone on here claims to be able to hack the system and give themselves any score they want. If it's true, why do it?
You're welcome, Paul.
Hi Paul, Paddling Nana (canoes) started a new chat for people who love the game. On my notepad right now, I see in the top left corner of this page "I suggest you ..." and underneath it a blue link called "general". If you click on that word it will take you to a number of choices. Last time I was there, it was the top one, but they move around. It is not on Facebook. If you want to play on the weekends without getting sucked into a tournament, download "Wordscapes in bloom" ... very similar, different backgrounds, ladybugs and butterflies. No tournaments. Make sure to set your Google play to require verification instead of one tap purchases. Very easy to accidentally tap a purchase, because they keep popping up and seem larger than on Wordscapes.
You can use the coins to buy hints. That's all they are really good for.
Paul, tap the general arrow at the top right of your screen, and the look for game chat post by paddlingnana. We have a number of players, including another Aussie named Shell. Also, if you want to win tournaments, pay the $2.99 to get rid of the ads, or play in airplane mode for short periods of time. You won't see the other people's scores when you are in airplane mode, so it will look like you are in first place until you go back online.
One more time ...
The people who "come out of nowhere" to win have been playing offline, or in airplane mode. Sometimes to save data, sometimes to avoid ads, sometimes actually on an airplane. It's not technically cheating. They can't see the scores unless they go back online, and they are taking a chance that they may end up way behind. Slower people sometimes use it as a strategy, because they can't keep up in a head to head race. There are also people who are just reallyfast. They've played many of the levels before and can solve them as fast as their fingers can move. There are also cheat sites, and I feel sorry for anyone who thinks that going to one of them and copying all of the answers is "winning ". There was even a woman who admitted to basically "buying" her win, by buying lots of hints, rockets and bees. I'm sure Wordscapes LOVES people like that, and doesn't consider it cheating. So enjoy the game for itself, assume that if you lose at the last minute that either you were hit by a "sniper" who was playing off line, or someone "buying" the answers, or maybe just by someone who is faster.
Laura Christina, I take it back. Eld and Dell just worked ...
Laura Christina, pretty sure they changed the dictionary. They admitted on another post that they are deliberately suppressing some of the bonus words. I found a scrabble anagram solver and tried a bunch of their words. I'd say that at least half don't work on wordscapes. Seems very cheap to me, considering it takes 100 coins to earn a hint, and you only earn one coin per bonus word. I don't think deliberately or eld work either, but I could be wrong. I find it discouraging when it rejects a valid word. They said they were considering changing it. I hope they do.
I'm new at Wordscapes, and started browsing this post for pointers. Two things have confused me. One, a post by Linda Morgan saying that she regularly gets up to 70 words a puzzle, and the other by someone whose name I forgot giving examples of odd short words that could be used as bonus words. I tried some of them, and more than half were rejected (dree, rede, eth, het, etc.) I'm wondering if there was a change in the dictionary that now disallows odd and archaic words, and the newer version with unlimited levels doesn't accept them. I had already noticed that I didn't get credit for perfectly normal words, and thought it cheap of the game to deny me a coin for it. Any thoughts?
Agree! Piggy Bank is annoying, as are all of the other popups to try to get us to keep spending money to play. Too easy to accidentally purchase things I don't want.

Laura, try Google for android or Apple store for iPhone or iPad directly.
Manco ... go to general comments and search chat. About third one down is a chat for people who love the game. Paddling Nana started it.
